As a keen, but knowledge challenged new beek, I inspect my debris tray every week and about three weeks ago, I saw a green piece of grass hanging down through the hive bottom grill. Because space is limited under there, I puzzled over how it had got there. Maybe a mouse was building in the hive, maybe an insect was in there using grass to cocoon it’s little grubs ready to emerge and eat my ladies. I was stressed ! Off I went in search of answers, forum first, then other forums, then YouTube and Google, nothing I had seen explained the grass. I counted down the rainy days to the next inspection…when finally it arrived, I couldn’t get in there fast enough !
Everything looked normal, no nice (dead or alive) no strange insects with grass cocoons I could see the metal grill as I peered down the frames to the bottom, all was calm on the western front !
A week later I looked at the debris tray, got low and peered under the hive only to see a number of grass bits dangling down from the other side of the hive what could it be ? I peered closer and noticed that each side edge looked as if chewed by small mouths, then it slowly dawned on me, yes beeoples, I had forgotten to peel off the protective plastic sticky backing that came with my brand new metal grill, Doh !
