Hi all, in my 11 years of beekeeping I’ve never requeened a colony. My bees have done well making new ones as needed, until maybe 2 years ago. Several colonies had become increasingly aggressive and last year, I decided to requeen them all.
Well, last Friday I went thru and killed the existing queens. One colony was a split and had two empty/emerged QCs. Based on the timing I took a chance and put the new queen in it, thinking it was possible that the new queen failed to return. However, when I looked in yesterday, the cage was mobbed with angry workers, biting the wires with evident bloodlust. So I took this poor queen and her harried attenantsbaway and am keeping the cage in a dark corner of my kitchen with a bit of water on a paper towel.
Today I had higher hopes for a better result when I checked in on the first of the other two. No such luck! This queen cafe was also mobbed, and when I lifted the frame it was on I saw a queen cell. Destroyed it, found more, destroyed them too. I was in the verge of replacing her - reasoning that now they’d be SOL with no more eggs to make their own new holy terror. But in an instant, I was swarmed with more and more horrifyingly aggressive workers and had to hastily close up and walk swiftly away. A cloud of them followed me inside, and several even persisted in trying to sting me. Usually, they just go to the windows and can be ushered back outside with no problem. ![]()
