What are ants looking for?

While extracting honey today from frames that were sitting on the table for 24 hrs., I noticed 2 ants on one frame. One would think that the ants were attracted to the honey. However not so. As the photos reveal, the ants were mainly interested in one solitary drone brood at the bottom of the frame.

The top photo indicates that there’s plenty of uncapped honey for the ants, if that’s what they’re after.
The closeup of the ants shows them breaking the cap open.

Cheers.

Ants need protein and fat too. A juicy pupa fits the bill perfectly.
