Bee entering hive that looks different to the rest

Hi Peter, I was thinking the same as you that the bees were cleaning out the dead ones. I believe that bees will continue to produce drones while they think there is the possibility of virgin queens in the area needing to get mated. The hive producing the drones may not be preparing to swarm at that point in time.

Drones successfully mating with virgin queens is a way of a colony passing on it’s genes.

Same here in Adelaide- very few drones- though each hive seems to have a few. Early in spring there were heaps with lots of drone comb on the bottom of all frames. Oddly last season I had drones in my hives right through winter?
