Bee inspired! Beginner questions

This month’s Beginner Beekeeping Live Q&A welcomed beekeepers from around the world to ask questions and learn together, with a reminder that every beekeeper starts as a beginner. Cedar and the team were joined by first-time aspiring beekeepers Margie and Wayne from the south coast of New South Wales and demonstrated a Flow Hive honey harvest. Viewers learned how to determine when honey is ready to harvest by checking that the cells are fully capped with wax, indicating the bees have reduced the moisture content and properly ripened the honey. Cedar explained how the Flow Frames work, how different nectar sources create distinct honey colours and flavours, and how the Flow Hive allows beekeepers to harvest individual frames and experience the unique characteristics of different floral sources rather than blending them together.

The session also covered practical beekeeping topics, including harvesting techniques, managing bees during harvest, the importance of leaving adequate honey stores for the colony, and how honey production varies throughout the season. Questions from viewers touched on protective clothing and bee stings, with advice that beginners should always wear full protective gear until they gain confidence and experience reading bee behaviour. The team also discussed hive materials and maintenance, explaining the recommended finishes for different hive timbers, the importance of protecting hive roofs from the elements, and how climate and weather can affect honey flow rates. Throughout the session, viewers were encouraged to ask questions and share their local beekeeping experiences, highlighting the diversity of climates, bee species, and beekeeping practices around the world.
