Bees under the hive?

Hi Tony, I sent you that ph.no. I generally check profiles for a first name, which appears under the username.

I sell bee colonies. The lady was just coming to pick up a colony. You can come any time you like.

In relation to: treat vs untreat. Properly treated will last a lifetime. Untreated will last 5-10 years if you’re lucky. I figured that out during my first 10 years of beekeeping. The previous 26 years is proof that it works.

I look forward to your call & visit, cheers

I have been making a slatted rack, but when it comes to the size/shape of the rack, i am understanding that the rack is the same size as the frame it is under. At that rate, my flow hive frames are 1in in width at the bottom with 8 frames per brood box. My question is: do I have the racks at 1in wide and directly under the frames? My question is due to following two guides for building, and I think they both relate to Langstrothe hives rather than the flow hives as they both speak of 3/4in width, yet, I would expect the frames to be same dimensions. Are the US Langstrothe hives different dimensions to the Aust ones? I ask that because the component sizes differ in dimensions to the Flow Hive - but…I may have misread the construction methods

Follow the directions for the Langstroth dimensions. The Flow frames may be wider, but the slatted rack goes under the brood box, not under the Flow super, so your rack will be under a Langstroth deep frame box. All Flow boxes are the same Langstroth dimensions, except for a limited number of “British National” Flow hives which were made for the UK market.

Thanks Dawn. I’ve been back down my shed and got it sorted.

One more thing I didn’t mention. Langstroth hives come in two widths - 8 frame and 10 frame. Please make sure that you are following instructions for an 8 frame if you have a Flow hive with 6 Flow frames. Most Langstroths are 10 frames, so sometimes you have to adjust! Also means that you only need 8 slats, rather than 10. I can’t remember which you have, but I would hate for you to waste time and wood on making the wrong size!

Jeff’s slatted racks have 9 slats, because he has found that 9 frames in the brood box work best for him, if I recall correctly

Dawn, perhaps the plans I have are for 10 frame hives. My FlowHive has 8 frames so I reduced the external measurements to fit the brood box and put 8 racks in - with a half inch between. From my reading the half inch will give ample room for the bees to move through to the space below. Would you agree?

Sounds good to me! I am glad that I mentioned it
