Flow Newbie Seeking Mentorship in CT

Greetings my name is Ivette! I am a disabled farmer & apiary newbie. I’m here to learn & be mentored. I am from CT. Did a full inspection today of my hive and it was fun. However, saw two small areas of mould outside the hive; not inside. I got a bit worried! Any advice? Thank you for your time and many blessings! :two_hearts:

Welcome Dr. Ivette! I am very fond of Conn - had many wonderful childhood visits to the coast and more recently my daughter went to college there.

Congrats on your new beekeeping journey! Don’t worry about the mold outside, it’s bound to happen in our east coast humidity. Some things you can do to minimize it or even keep it away altogether are:

Situating the hive in a spot that gets sun early in the day (afternoon shade is helpful)

Keeping it on a stand and not in a very low-lying spot

Keeping the immediate area clear of tall grass/weeds/underbrush

Using exterior primer & paint - tung oil and some others can harbor mold

If the mold is not too close to the entrance you could try wiping it off with a damp rag with a mild vinegar or bleach solution. If it’s right near the entrance and you really hate seeing it, suit up and do this at night when the bees are mostly inside. Just keep the solution weak and the bucket away from the hive so the smell isn’t overpowering and as annoying to the bees.
