I got the bees but did I do it right?

JeffH and Peter48 I am giving you an update. I have been noticing bees coming and going into the hive with their legs filled up with pollen. I think that is a good sign. I also pulled a rookie move today and went and took the top hive box off to gain access to the middle to try to observe the queen and got attacked in a bad way. Lesson for me is 1. Never never go out there and do that without the smoker on and working and 2. Never never do that again without wearing my bee keeper suit.

Experience is expensive. I am grateful for experience. On the other hand I now know that no one be able to walk up to my hive in the day and start moving it around. LOL

Well done Lisa, that’s a lesson well learned.

Yesterday a bloke came to pick up some bees from me. I asked if he had a bee suit so I can show him a few things. He said ā€œI’ll be right, I don’t wear a bee suit or glovesā€. It didn’t take long before he copped a sting above an eye. Then a bit later he thought a bee was down the back of his neck. He had me looking for that. It might have been a hive beetle because he didn’t get stung there.

He didn’t get much of a lesson during all that excitement. He was happy that I had a spare hat & veil for the remainder of the time I spent transferring the bees into his box…

cheers

Yeah I learned that lesson. I can pet them when they are going in and out of their hive but never will I open it again without my gear on. LOL

My arm is still swollen bad. The one on my jaw is not so much swollen. Went and drank a bunch of benadryl and fell asleep.

Funny, some days I can mow and whipper snip around my hives and the bees can totally ignore me and other days they are full on agro. I went to cut the grass a couple of weeks ago with all the gear on and every hive was full on so I was forced to give it away, went to do it again the next day with no problems at all and both days were the same temperature and sort of a day.
Cheers

Yeah I am learning this to be true. Each day I go the hive and talk to the bees, pet the bees, let them walk on me and yesterday it was like they were in a war. LMAO Never will I open that box without smoke and gear again.

Yes, even the calmest bees can be kamikaze when they are raising brood.

LOL. I couldn’t have described what happened to me in a better way. Thank you for the good laugh as I nurse my arm from redness, swelling, and itching.

Yeah :clap::clap::clap: Well done Lisa. I’ve never came across a swarm or seen one so love Reading this post. Dead jealous

:rofl::rofl::rofl: Welcome to the world of beekeeping and how fun eagerness can :honeybee: Hahaha classic, you make me chuckle and your not the only one who likes to peek then gets a good telling off from the bees :joy::joy::+1:

LOL HappyHibee,

I went to urgent care last night over one of the stings. I had them laughing in the entire facility. Turns out I wasn’t dying and the reaction was normal. It’s funny how I didn’t even think to get my gear on before doing that. The bees have certainly trained me. I made sure to go back to their hive and talk to them through the door multiple times just to get over the fear they instilled in me. I am going to get pictures of the inside once I put the suit on and check them out.

Update: I have decided to just let the bees settle in for a while before opening their hive box again. I do still go out and check on them and show some love to the keepers of the door and refill their water sugar mixture. I think they are getting used to me. I now have people in my community wanting me to go get their bees. I think I’m going to need more hive boxes.:joy: I will update with pictures once I get into the box again.

How’s it going with the bees???

I need a laugh :rofl::rofl::rofl::stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

LOL HappyHippie, They are only giving me tingles all over my body when I go out to see them. LOL Haven’t been any more stings but they have trained me to leave them alone for now and do not open their box. I go out each day and pet them and talk to them and to check their water/sugar supply. When they come out to see me I notice I get all tingly all over. I’m trying to push past the fear. It is hilarious.

I have question. I am going to go on a few trips four days and then again for seven to 10 days. Do I need to get a bee sitter before I go. LOL

No need to get a bee sitter for that short a time, the bees might enjoy a break from you fussing over them. and enjoy doing some serious work.
Just lifting the roof off the hive for 30 seconds, no work being done, it will take around 4 hours for the bees to settle down. Doing a full inspection then they will take at least 24 hours to calm down and get back to normal.
I do normal inspection every 2 to 3 weeks unless I see something odd at the entrance. Some might say even that is too often.

I am thinking my bees are turning arficanized. Just went out there and just talked to them and took two stings for no reason. I am getting scared now.

They are starting to scare me. I can usually go out there and give them fluid and et them etc but tonight they went crazy again. Took another sting on my forearm and one on my stomach through my shirt. This isn’t normal behavior for them. I did have an argument with my boyfriend today so maybe they still sense anger in me? Is that possible. God I don’t want to go back to the doctors cause I am going to Laughlin tomorrow and that was not in my list of things to do.

Bees will get angry/defensive once their sugar or nectar supply dries up, also changes in weather & atmospheric pressure etc will do it too.

If you stand directly in front of their hive or in their flight paths and are wearing something dark or fluffy they will probably go you.

If they were Africanised they would probably have been attacking you en masse from the get go.

Don’t know if they can sense anger but they may sense fear so always best to approach them with confidence I find, and don’t disturb them unless there is a real reason to. It hasn’t been determined on what level bees can or cannot hear so talking to them is probably falling on deaf ears.

Thank you Stevo. The weather was different yesterday with some humidity clouds in the air, which does produce atmospheric changes. Thanking God right now that my arm only swelled up like Popeye instead of the Michelin Man.

I will admit that I have lost some confidence after my trip to urgent care over one of the last stings and maybe they indeed can sense that. I will go back to leaving them alone for a few days. Thank you for your input.
