I was thinking about your concerns with adding the second box so late in the season. A nice way to do it is to add it underneath the existing box. It has worked very well in the past for me. It is less of a thermal “shock” for the bees, as the empty space is below the brood, and the hot air they need for the brood rises. It is less convenient to add it underneath, as you have to lift the full box off the bottom board, but that is the only real disadvantage.
I decided to put a medium super with foundationless frames on top of flow box for now to get the bees inside. Tomorrow I will add a second brood box with rite-cell foundation frames under the original one. I will be harvesting the rest of the flow frames and removing for the rest of the season. I have enough honey for my family and friends for this year. Not bad for first year beeking I think. I have another hive on standby for splitting when the time comes.
Looking back at this post, these Flow frames were quickly filled really showing what is possible with a strong hive and a good nectar flow. No hesitation by these bees to use the Flow frames. I am guessing the good rains in that part of the world a month or so back helped bring on good nectar. Keep up the good work!
