Observation Hive Newbie!

Hi! We will be moving into a house soon, and I want to have a greenhouse and maybe a couple hives to start. I wanted to do a permanent observation hive, but don’t wanna stress out the bees. I was thinking about cornering off a corner of the greenhouse (to give the hive more space with a whole corner instead of a single panel frame). I was thinking that maybe putting one-way window glass could create a less stressful environment for the hive if I left it exposed for long periods. Could this work? Would the greenhouse be too hot for a hive? There would be a tube/tunnel to the outside obviously

Hi Sari,

I think you need to do a lot more research before making a decision on keeping bees.

Hi, I would start off with 2 conventional bee hives, either Langstroth’s or Flow Hives, in your yard till you know how to care for and manage your bees. You will get lots of information and hands on experience by finding a local bee group.
The reason for 2 hives it that you can compare them both to know if there is a problem. Two hives take very little extra time to care for than one.
When it comes time for a green house hive, if you still want to go that way, then local climate and advice will help in deciding if it is even possible for you.
The more you can learn before you set up your own hives the better prepared you will be to care for your livestock. Bee keeping is so rewarding and so much fun, but you will be responsible for all those lives too so it can be heartbreaking if you don’t do it right, ok…
Cheers
