Re Use of Flow Hive after euthanasia has been done?

The DPI are coming back today to euthanize my Flow 2 Hive with petrol, because of Verroa destructor mite. Can I re use the hive again later after this has been done? Or do I have to start again with a new hive? Craig

Hi Craig, I can’t speak for the plastic, however the wood should be ok to reuse, if you were to scorch it first. You could do the same with the wooden frames after scraping them reasonably clean. That’s the approach I would take.

It will be fine after you let it air out. Considering you cannot move that gear or keep bees there for three years they will be well and truely aired out by then.

After seeing Jeff’s comment the petrol might do nasty things to your plastic but you will have plenty of time to assess the situation. After the three weeks just open it, clean it and keep it in a shadey place.

Cheers
Rob.

I am so sorry your colony has to be euthanized. And I can’t understand why one would use petrol when soapy water is just as effective at killing insects? That would have zero impact on your equipment after a thorough rinsing.

This is a study comparing the various methods - maybe your DPI would consider changing to a non-toxic one given the data:
