I have just had a pretty average experience with this style of trap. I usually use apithors over winter but was short this year and used some of these style traps that were given to me as a sample as an alternative in one hive. Whether itās coincidence or not (sample size of one) this hive had large numbers of beetle on first inspection coming out of winter with nothing in the trap, all others have checked out fine so far.
Where are you placing them? I had these across top bars of the brood boxes one frame in on each side.
Hi, I place these with Diathomaceous Earth on top of the super and another on top of the brood box, however they are not always successful and so using other traps like Apithor, chux and a slotted bottom board really helps. As well, I find that my russian bees propolis up the holes in a few weeks so they need regular changing and cleaning.
Interesting you mention chux too, I am almost convinced that the effectiveness of chux against SHB is an urban legendā¦are you getting positive results?
a little, the most effective I have seen with the Chux is rolling around a stick and placing it on top of the super. I have not had much success but I have seen my beekeeper colleagues pull them out of their hives with 20-30 beetles caught in them. And also this, its similar to folder like the ones inserted into filing cabinets except its fluffy on the inside, Its put against the side wall of the hive and is known to be quite effective.
Iām not understanding this, sorry, this is a product? What are you holding in these photos are those small hive beetles all those black dots. If so thatās quite a few, I hope to God I never see that many.
Can you describe a bit more please or send me a link to some reading
Chux is a brand of wash cloth in Australia (http://www.chux.com.au). It has a thicker texture than a normal cloth with a longer weave. The theory is that the beetles get stuck in the weave/loops of the cloth and canāt escape. I havenāt found this with my personal experience, but it appears to be a common approach when the issue of SHB is raised at beekeeper club meetings.
I think part of the attraction is the ingenuity of using a basic household item that everyone has to solve a seemingly unrelated problem. Itās similar in that respect to showing people how to use a car battery charger to embed foundation (which definitely does work!) .
I use this product, thank you for explaining I think itās exactly the same thing and they do work quite quite well, occasionally a bee I will find caught and dead in it but not often
Hello Everyone. So this year I tried something different which was a mistake. Before my hives was doing amazing but since I tried something different this year hive beetles has been a pest. So before I tried something different I had dug holes for each of my hive stand. I put small buckets in the holes big enough so my hive stand legs would fit in them. I put burnt oil in the buckets from preventing hive beetles ants or any other insect from climbing into my hive by using my hive stand legs. To be honest I never had hive beetle until I tried something different which was my mistake this year. I took all the buckets up and set crates on the ground and just put my hives on them bad mistake. I got ants hive beetles attacking my hives. I had seven hives I lost one this week. So I went back to my small buckets and burnt oil. This has been working amazing for me. But it was my fault for changing. I would have still had my hive if I had stuck to this but if you guys are having trouble try this it really does help. Hope I was able to help someone hope everyone has a great day.
dont be hard on yourself. The hive beetles fly in so the pots are only good for the ants. So inspections and traps are your best. I did try Silica dust. I cant say if it did or didnāt work. I was a bit anal about ants initially then found never did any damage and pretty much did house keeping outside. Donāt forget to reduce the entries particularly when there is less activity the guards have a better chance to fend off the beetle. I unfortunately had to sell my hives due to moving. It was always satisfying to squish another beetle. Also check the bottom screen is secure. As far as ants go there are so many types. Just keep trying. What do you think did the hive in?
