Bobby, I m getting my Nuc from a Georgia supplier…I did consider a couple of them from North Ga but opted for one in Coweta Co instead…I will let you know what mine looked like when I get them in mid April.
I used to live in Georgia…in Smyrna. I loved all the dogwoods and the jonquils.
Now you made me go and learn something! I thought Smyrna was in Turkey, now I know there is another one! Plus, I had no idea what a jonquil was. Research revealed that it is a type of Narcissus (aka daffodil) and it is pollinated by bees!
See, we can bring the discussion back around to bees if we try hard enough!
Right now is a beautiful time in the south…the blooms just seem to suddenly appear one day and then more and more…I now live in Alabama but the Spring here looks just like Georgia…we are just 150 miles west of Atlanta
They re one of my favorite flowers because along with forsythia they are our earliest Spring bloomers…
Oh dear …I am awash with nostalgia…such a beautiful spring there. We planted some little groups of Jonquils here where we live in the UK…in memory of our time there. Jonquils are just the tiniest of daffodils…so pretty… I wonder if dogwoods would grow?
That’s what I work on to make a 2 frame nuc. I frame of emerging brood and a frame of food and make the rest up with drawn frames will give you three frames of bees in a few days with room for the queen to start laying straightaway
They must smell fabulous too! They have apparently been grown commercially in France for more than 2 centuries, just to extract their fragrance for use in perfumes. They are still very much in demand in the perfume industry.
My Nuc came from the same supplier (Victor is actually my club pres.). My Nuc was 3 FULL frames, and 2 empty. I’ve had them for a week, and I have not noticed any issues. THey are currently sucking down about 32oz of 1:1 a day. My queen was released Sunday Afternoon/Monday Morning. I am going to go in and see if I can find some eggs saturday.
Early Easter egg hunt?
Hi & thank you Dee, I love that ratio. It IS amazing the difference just one full frame of sealed brood can make. Considering how tightly packed the bees are in the cells & when they emerge they grow a bit bigger & stretch those legs & wings out.
A colony can change from a moderate looking colony to a colony that’s ready to swarm in the space of a few days or a week.
I wish I lived a tad closer to this place, the bees would be going bonkers.
20 million daffodils.
Twenty-Freaking- Million.
It is only 6.25 miles away as the crow flies. Maybe they’ll discover it someday.
I was so much more relieved after speaking with Victor. Elrod’s needs to change their website and what they say on the phone. I’m cool with a three frame nuc - not cool with being led to believe it was a five frame nuc by Elrod’s. Victor had nothing to do with that and I think he is a great guy.
Relax you’re not missing out. The bees won’t work those daffs. At least they don’t in the uk
You got your nuc the same day I did, do you remember the exact day that was? I think mine are really good bees…here’s a link to what I think is 3 weeks after installing the nuc. https://youtu.be/LuUIoN1MqDo
Wow, you already have a super on there? Gutsy!
It was Saturday the 19th @Chet_Calhoun. Why do you have a super on already?
Not enough bees in that hive to be putting a super on it already.
