Good morning all. I heard from a beek buddy of mine that 70% of her colonies died out this year, and learned that this is a widespread occurrence similar to the one 20 years ago. It was labeled Colony Collapse Disorder, and came to be understood as the addition of varroa mite pressures over time especially regarding a synergistic effect of pesticide & miticide residue buildup in wax as well as forage loss. This time, it is not believed that varroa nor poor winter management are to blame. The research is underway:
