Trying to decide to pull the super or not for the winter! We were going to leave it so pulled the excluder. But then read that the crystallization of the honey in the super could ruin the mechanism and the queen laying eggs in the spring is a problem.
Hi Dawn, you have your answer - pull that super
. If your bees don’t have enough honey to get through winter, you can feed back what you harvest from the Flow and/or use fondant or winter patties. Make sure to insulate the top and sides so they don’t have to work as hard to keep warm enough.
Eva how do you feel about insulated wraps? Montana is cold and snowy but considered dry.
I like them, but ended up cutting mine because the ones I got come as a sort of tube - awkward to put on and take off. I taped the ends closed and just bungee them on now. I move all my hives close together and drape a whole wrap over the tops, & secure with bricks.
I would use them in your climate.
Thank you. I really appreciate your help.
Eva,
How ‘clean’ do I get the flow hive frames? And how is best to store over the winter until spring?
Thank you
Dawna
