Hi there,
I treated my single hive with formic acid on May 10, which had disappointing consequences. I was getting ready to make a walk-away split, as my bees were making lots of queen cells and getting ready to swarm. The formic acid killed my queen and a decent amount of bees from my hive. Luckily there were 10+ queen cells, so I divided the hive, and removed a few of the smaller QCs. I left them undisturbed for a couple of weeks and both hives now have laying queens and are doing well.
The issue I’m concerned about is this: the first hive has two brood boxes and the flow honey super, but the bees have completely filled the 2nd brood box with honey, and aren’t using the flow honey super at all. Both boxes are full of live bees and I’m concerned the queen won’t have enough room to lay since they filled the 2nd brood box with honey.
Should I try swapping out some of the honey frames with fresh frames to give her more space to lay, or will they just work it out on their own? Any other ideas/suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks so much!
Best,
Lyndsey
