Just wondering if there is any reason not to assemble frames (build, wire and foundation) a long time before needing them? Would it be best to store them in a container if going to be sitting around for a while? I’m particularly wondering about the wax foundation.
It depends on what you call “sitting around for a while”. If it’s only a month or two, that would be ok to fit it now.
Thanks Jeff. Yeah I don’t think it would be for more than a couple of months.
Wax foundation, even though it’s made of bees wax isn’t all that attractive to wax moths. It takes quite a while before they get into it. It seems to be brood capings, as well as brood cocoons & slumgum (a residue after processing bees wax) that wax moths are mainly attracted to.
That’s good to know. Wax moths were the main thing that I was concerned about.
It so happens that I’ve had three nice newly made frames sitting in storage with foundation in them for one year now There was even a wax moth festival going on in an adjacent box (all dealt with now) and the moths didn’t touch them. I was surprised but now it adds up - good to know, @JeffH!
I have assembled a heap of frames ready for this coming spring and they have been sitting in my shed for a few months now without issue.
You always need a few empty boxes to use for manipulations. As long as you don’t fill all the boxes there’s no reason not to assemble the frames. Wax foundation is another issue. It may sag over time. Probably best to wait to put it in.
Yeah I’m just in the process of accumulating extra bits and pieces, so when I do end up needing them they will be ready to go.
