Hello from Northeast Ohio. We have a bright and sunny 44 degrees and I see alot of activity outside the box today! Is that normal? Is there anything I should be doing? Just checkin on behalf of my Bee Babies! Thanks!
44 degrees. I’d be outside too .
Even a bee gotta poop, and they only do it outside the hive, unless they are sick. Seriously though, if it is bright, sunny and not windy, thousands of bees may make brief “cleansing” flights on late fall or winter days. That is why you should not let the entrance get obstructed by snow.
My bees were out last 2 days as well with similar temperatures as you here in Wisconsin. They were probably excited to come out.
Chuckled when I read this Dawn_SD. You are absolutely right…that’s what mine were doing today…they like white Beamers for their biffy.
And they were desperate to get water:
Beautiful photos @Doug1! Even bee poo looks attractive when it is on a Beemer!
Usually they won’t be foraging until it hits about 50 F. But they will take cleansing flights when it’s freezing. I have seem them foraging (only once in 46 years) at 27 F on a calm sunny day. I assume they were robbing out a dead colony somewhere as there was a steady stream of bees and there could be nothing blooming at the time.
Well sounds like I shouldnt be a worried Bee mommy then! Thanks all!
This just wrong on so many levels Dawn
