Ok a small update. there’s now a small pile of drone larvae just outside the front of the hive. I think they are starting the eviction process. lol

People always seem to jump to the Varroa explanation. Bees have been cannibalizing brood for as long as humans have been observing bees. They salvage all the protein they can from it. They haul out drone brood whenever there is a dearth. But yes, they also uncap Varroa infested brood and remove the Varroa. Then they usually recap it. Occasionally they sense damage and remove the entire larvae.

If that turns out to be the case, it may well suggest a nectar dearth. In which case you have found the answer to whether you should feed or not. :smile:
