Bees laying in wait

I have a bee box that recently got populated unexpectedly, (long story), and there are many bees on the ground just chilling. If I approach one, the are very alert. Seems as if they are a lookout bee, or something to that affect. They stay still most of the day. Box is active for about 2 weeks now. Curious about the bees on the ground.???

Well they aren’t guard bee defending the hive entrance.
Take a closer look, really close, and you might see if they are finding moisture or maybe mineral on the ground that they need. You may see their tongues working on whatever is on the ground.
Cheers
