Bees making Honey in the roof of the flow hive Super

I think Kangaroo Island has more echidnas. I haven’t seen a single one at Willunga. :frowning: Maybe I can transplant a few…

there were certainly plenty of echidnas on my brothers property. And also plenty of lizards. But there were a lot of ants- very big bull ant nests all over. Don’t get me wrong- I’m not saying I know ants are not a risk. I just wonder as as far as I can tell commercial beekeepers don’t do anything to ward them off?

One good thing about being a small time hobby beekeeper is you can go the extra lengths- protect against ants- insulate the hive- weekly inspections of you want. I just wonder if ants really are a big issue is all?

We personally lost a hive to Argentine ants here in California last year. They are a really big problem here, even the local Department of Agriculture says that they are threat to bees. So I guess it depends on where you are, and what kind of ants you are talking about. I have seen the whole of the front of a deep box black with ants, and each ant is about 2mm long, so you can imagine how many that is, swarming the hive. Very sad. :cold_sweat:
