Dawn can I use your pic to help others in some facebook groups I participate in.
It’s a great example of manipulating space.

Of course! Thank you for asking. I am delighted to help teach others the different ways of doing things.
Dawn, I just looked at your photo & noted the slatted rack. Recently I picked up a huge free pine wall unit which I converted into 13 10 frame supers, as well as 8 bottom boards & 8 lids. I’ve been pondering the idea of seeking out more unwanted furniture, purely for the purpose of making 50 plus slatted racks. I still have to treat & paint my last project yet, which I’ll do once our weather cools down a bit. However I think the slatted racks is doable after that
I pulled out some beautiful brood frames yesterday. It was the gaps above the bottom bars that detracted from then.
I might be able to find a carpentry plan for you if you need it. But I think it is on this forum, and perhaps @busso made one at some point
Thanks Dawn, I looked at some after posting my reply. I saw Busso’s plan which puts the slats at right angles to the frames. I saw other plans that put the slats parallel & directly under the frames. I’m wondering if that’s the way I should go… Because I use 9 frames in a 10 frame brood box, I’d use 9 slats & place them directly under where the frames sit.
Sounds good to me! I look forward to photos and narrative!
Hi & thank you dawn. I figure now that I have to put my words into action. I started out by sourcing two items of free furniture last night. I pick one up this afternoon & the other one tomorrow afternoon. The lady for the second one reckons it’ll take 3 burly men to get it onto my truck. With that in mind, I should get a lot of slatted racks out of that one. I should start a new thread, starting with photos of the free furniture.
I can hardly wait! Your stories are always so inspiring
Hi Jeff, funny enough, I was going to ask your opinion on slatted racks and if they are only used on solid bottom hives ?
I recently read a post that Rusty Burlew had on slatted racks. She uses them and has plans posted on her forum which I hope I have attached https://www.honeybeesuite.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/SLATTED-RACK-093017.pdf
Might be of interest to anyone game enough to give it a whirl

Hi Sara, the one I’m looking at copying is on Rusty Burlow’s site.
Yes and it’s still in my shed but please don’t tell Wilf.
