Hi all, in North Idaho, United States. I plan to harvest from my 1st year package after my Formic Pro treatment and close to the end of September before it gets too cold. Here’s my question, I plan on doing a total harvest (capped and uncapped) in the super. After that, what is the process to remove the super and get the bees out of it? Do I brush them off the frames? Let the super sit there until they vacate? Fume boards? Just curious to learn best practice a few weeks before go time. Thanks!
Hi Miguel, welcome to the forum! It gets pretty cold where you are, am I right? Here’s a link to a previous post with lots of very important info about this topic:
I didn’t re-read the whole thing so in case it doesn’t mention how to get the bees out of the super after harvesting it, what I do is place the inner cover UNDER the flow super. Put the outer cover/roof back on and leave it like that for 1-2 days. The bees will store the residue down in the brood area since the super is now separated by the cover and seen as “not our house”.
After that, rinse, dry and store your Fframes safe from pests for the winter.
