Sometimes it’s better to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission. ![]()
Although I’m registered with the ag dept I refuse to register with the council.
Local council Quote. "Where complaints regarding bees are received, the complaint will be investigated to ensure that any nuisance that exists is abated and bee management principles are being followed. "
Right there is an excuse to shut you down and if registered you’ll be first port of call if there is a complaint in the area. I wonder if the 2 feral tree colonys on my block have read this?
I have to strongly agree with you Mr.Skeggley!
But down the hill in the burbs with smaller blocks, neighbours tend to know anyway what their next doors’ up to. I told the old lady next to me because she’s into gardening and can appreciate bees, but never told the bastard on the other side.
Yeah I’m legit with the Agricultural Department. As far as I know I don’t have to let the shire know as long as I keep only two.( plan is to have four… shhhhh)
So not finished yet be soon to be
That looks beyond awesome! I thought you were going to glue some pipes from Bunnings…
Have you thought about rain management, and inspections? I’m sure you did…
I am making a removable fly screen to go in the bottom so rain can run straight out the bottom
You may want to up the mesh size so that more debris can fall throuh
I’m already impressed, it fixes a lot of problems where you have limited space.
Thanks for all the positive posts
I think a mesh on top will be even better… or a solid roof with an entrance.
I’d put a roof over the top to stop water coming in, but also a screen that debris can pass through on the bottom, like the mesh on the bottom of a flow base. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.
If the mesh screen size on the bottom is greater than 3mm the bees will enter and exit through the mesh at the bottom rather than fly up the chimney.
I hope the vent next to the chimney has mesh to prevent a swarm from taking up residence in the wall cavity? Once the bees are established at this point the girls will become very curious.
What’s stopping them from taking up residence in the chimney itself?
looks comfy and well built…
They could but they will be removed … time will tell
Can you easily access the inside to remove comb, without dismantling it? I don’t know whether the top is going to be exposed or covered. Maybe leaving it exposed will make it less desirable for them to take up residence inside.
I really really hope this works for you, you have put a lot of effort.
I am going to leave it exposed
@Numbatino Bees tend to want to build comb onto a more horizontal surface so they wouldn’t be likely to build there in the Chimney, but stranger things can happen.
Cheers
You will get some good ventilation in that especially in the hot weather. Be just like a chimney.
Any updates on this project? I’m just getting started in all of this and am considering a chimney like this. So how’d 2020 go for you with this chimney entrance?
@9magenta Aaron how did the chimney work for you?
