Newbie beeks in southern Tasmania! We just got a nuc for our flow hive and we’re so excited
We have our entrance setup facing mostly north which as facing away from the direction majority of the really strong winds come from. Tucked in behind the acacia which acts as a pretty solid wind break. We’ll be transferring the nuc into our brood box in the next few days.
I’ve been doing lots of reading in the forums and it’s been very informative. Looking forward to learning from you all.
Welcome, I am excited for you. I am 1 year this month and remember how excited I was. I put my nuc on the stand so when I transferred the bees into the brood box they knew exactly where they lived.
Best of luck.

I also love the roof colour you have
Thank you! Ahhh that’s a great idea! oh well… we’re transferring them on Wednesday so hopefully the small adjustment in height doesn’t take them too long. It’s been fascinating sitting watching them. They gathered fluorescent orange pollen today. Lots of bright orange Gazanias flowering in the garden right now.
Hi Maie, welcome to the forum. Don’t be overly concerned about the height adjustment. After you transfer the bees, and you have the crown board in place, bees will stand at the entrance and open their Nasonov gland (scent gland) and blow breeze behind them to indicate to the other bees where home is. Look out for that, because it’s interesting to see. Place the empty box adjacent to the entrance, which will empty out in no time.
Don’t spend too much time looking for the queen, on account that I have found young queens to be vulnerable to getting balled & killed. All you need to see is evidence, by way of young brood and eggs that she’s there.
It is fun to watch. I sometimes video in slow mo on my phone to see how much pollen is coming in and what colours they are brining in. I have seen some very interesting things through doing this and very funny bees that fall out of the hive that I would have normally missed because they move very fast.
