Hi, I have only recently purchased my Flow hive and introduced a 5 frame nuc (Mid January).
I have been assuming that I need to leave the hive, without the super, to settle and populate until Spring next year as it appears to be too late in the season to add the super.
Am I correct or is there a possibility of harvesting some honey late in Summer this year?
Thanks.
Hello and welcome to the forum. Don’t expect honey in your first season. If you get burr comb with honey in it you can try that. Good luck with your journey!
As its a new hive with plenty of new frames to build out that have not yet been treated for varroa you could always remove a frame with stores from the brood box when full and capped and replace with a fresh frame.
Obviously depends on the time you have left in the season. Also if you have time, once the hive is fully edtablished adding the super to allow them to prep the frames gives you a head start next season.
I’m having the same dilemma (newbie in North Yorkshire, UK). My 6 frame nuc arrives late May and I was thinking I could add a shallow super in place of the Flow Super - see if I can get some comb honey. But: your idea of pinching a frame of stores is genius! Not sure if there is enough time to get the Flow Super on for prep for next season. I would have to remove it for winter - would I just take it off as it is and store in an air-tight box over winter? Thanks for any thoughts. Much appreciated.
