Lava in my honey

Hi there,

I just drained one of my frames and there was a fair bit of debris and two lava in the honey. No sure what to make of it.

Hi Andrew, welcome to the forum. That looks like hive beetle larvae. I would suggest cleaning the channel out before harvesting any more honey. Plus physically inspecting the frame to see if anything is going on inside the hive.

I think a good idea is to do a sniff test of every channel before harvesting honey from them. Also make sure that the leak back gap is always clear. Bees can propolize over them, which allows unripe honey to sit there and ferment.

PS In relation to the honey you harvested, if it smells and tastes alright, you could probably run it through a fine strainer. I did that with a client’s honey once.
