Hey there
I currently have a Flowhive on my property but we are selling and i can’t take the hive to a new home. I’ve just done a honey extraction and have noticed a small white caterpillar - skinny - just near the honey exit point. Looks like a wax moth larvae.
I am looking to move my hive on as i move out in the 3 weeks. What can i do in that time to minimize any issues for the future owner? is it not a good idea to move it at this stage? Ive never had wax moth before so im very unsure how to deal with it in such a small time.
Could be small hive beetle larva too. These look similar but have a set of 6 little legs in front, whereas wax moth larvae look more like maggots.
Best to open up the hive and find out the extent of whichever pest is lurking. SHB is almost always present to some degree without being a huge problem, but once wax moths are setting up shop it means the bees are in serious trouble. I’m hoping it’s the former - and you can squash as many adult SHB as you see when you look in, clean up potential breeding places like dead bees, then put a trap in.
