Roof Over Apiary

Thinking about putting a roof over my small apiary. It’s kinda exposed on a hill with no shade so maybe a roof over it with roll up sides will block the sun in summer and wind in winter. whatcha think?

From what all I have come across direct sun is best to prevent pests. If it gets extremely hot there some shade during the middle of the hottest part of the day might be helpful but I would try to leave it as sunny as possible.

Hi Chet, all my hives are in the sun during the hottest time of the day. The important thing to do with traditional hives is to paint the lids a cool color, white for example. The flow lid is cool by design. I wouldn’t put a roof over your hive.

Mine sit out in the sun but they have a reflective metal roof with an insulating quilt underneath. Now protection from wind is another matter and worth considering. Maybe a hedge would be valuable.

Cheers
Rob.

Sun is your friend, let it in.
