Sugar Water Feeder

If I use a chicken waterer will the bees drink from it? This seems like a easy way to feed the bees.

Yes but…

  1. Don’t put it outside the hive. It will encourage robbing, which is a really bad idea.
  2. Put pebbles or sticks in the trough to act as a landing pad for the bees, otherwise they will drown.
  3. Don’t cover the hole in the inner cover if you put the waterer on top of that (inside a couple of deep brood boxes to exclude robbers). That means you will need a pretty small waterer.
  4. There are better options like a “rapid feeder”, an inverted mason jar, or a bee feeder pail (which is my preference).
