Hello, newbie here. Just received my nuc box a week ago. I have the flow hive 2+
Any tips or tricks for overwintering around central/northern MN? Right now I just have the 1 brood box with 10 frames. I am trying to decide if I should get another brood box or if people leave there flow super on for the winter with honey? Someone mentioned to me spring is actually what kills them due to the variable weather patterns and moisture build up in the brood box- if this is true would a quilt box or hot box with moisture board help. Would appreciate others thoughts, tips, and experiences. Thank you in advance!
Hello and welcome to the Flow forum!
For detailed discussions of you questions, you can use the magnifying glass search tool at the top of this page to search the forum. Meanwhile, here are some brief thoughts for you:
- Yes, you should have 2 brood boxes, if you can fill both before this season ends
- No, do not leave the Flow super on over winter. There are a whole host of reasons for that, but with your climate, it just isn’t a good idea
- Yes, quilt boxes are a great idea. Not so sure about hot boxes - I haven’t seen anyone here discuss using them consistently.
- Consider insulating your hive as well. You can buy roof insulation foam from a hardware store, cut it to size and duct tape it around the hive. There are many other ways to insulate, but make sure you leave an exit for cleansing flights, and consider an upper hive entrance if you get deep snow.
Good luck with your new colony!
