We have just transferred a swarm into our flow hive and I noticed quite a few ants crawling over the hive this morning.
I added vegetable oil to the ant guards but I was wondering if you tighten them up or leave a gap between the top and bottom caps?

Leave a gap. Depending on the size of the ants, I would leave a gap of 5mm to 1cm, so that they can’t bridge the gap by climbing on top of one another. Also make sure that no long grass or weeds are touching the hive above the ant guards.
