Hey Forum Members,
Flow Hive users have often told us they feel like honey from their Flow Hives is in a class of its own - and it seems the Royal Easter Show coordinators agree! In 2018 they created a special category in the competition for Flow produced honey, distinct from all other honey entrants. (Possibly due to the purity and clarity of Flow honey and the ability to harvest one flavour at a time more easily?)
We would love to see some entries from our Forum community in this esteemed competition - you have until 12 February to get your entries in here.
Key dates for the show are as below:
12 February 2020 Entries for the Flow Honey Competition Close
20-21 March 2020 Delivery of Exhibits
3-14 April 2020 Sydney Royal Easter Show Opening Dates
Here are some tips for your entries:
- Ensure your frames are 100% capped before harvesting to make sure the honey is fully ripe. Thicker honey tends to attract higher scores.
- Reduce the amount of air bubbles in the honey by pouring the honey down the side of the jar, and filling the jar as close as possible to the top.
- You may choose to filter your honey if you wish to make it even clearer by putting a stocking or similar material over the tube. Honey from mid-flow also tends to be clearer.
- Check out the Competition Schedule and make sure your entry complies with comp regulations.
If memory serves me correctly a local Flow honey producer also took out the general honey win last year as well!
Good luck to all entrants - as long as you take good care of your bees you’re all winners to us
P.S. Flow will almost certainly offer a supplementary prize to the winner - I’ll get back to you on that one ASAP…
