This might be silly, but why is it most black? What is the black?

That’s the foundation, it’s made out of some kind of artificial rubber-like material.
Plastic foundation is often black, because it makes brood easier to spot. However, bees generally hate plastic, even when it is wax coated. I have tried it and got a lot of crazy comb, floating islands (my description, not an official concept) - each island has a stem on the plastic foundation, but then mushroom out into the available space to create a pure, flat wax island of comb for the bees. I speculate that the bees do this because plastic doesn’t carry the vibrations of their communications as well as pure wax does. I now exclusively use wired wax foundation in my brood boxes, and the bees take to that very well.
