Removing top board to allow for space for sugar cakes

Hello friends,

I have a Flow Hive, and I’m considering giving my girls some sugar cakes, which I just learned about today. Everyone suggests making a shim to add some extra space for the cakes.

Could I, instead, just take off the top board and use the space in the gables roof to house the sugar cakes? Or is there something stupid about this idea? Thank you!

Hey Paul, not stupid at all! The shim is more important for the flat standard lids, but the gabled roof makes a nice place for feed. If you can add some kind of insulation to the underside of the roof as well, you’d be golden.
