Second smaller brood box

Hello,
I had my helper accidently put some smaller frames in the brood box. I found the larger frames that are supposed to be in there and I was planning on switching them out. Since I have 4 smaller frames full of brood and bees now can I put a smaller box on the brood box. I don’t want to waste all that brood. Thanks everyone for your help I really appreciate it.

I would use a smaller box for the smaller frames. If they have an arc of comb underneath them (wouldn’t be surprising if they have been in a larger box for a while), then you can take a sharp knife, or piece of dental floss and remove the comb from the bottom of the small frame. You can then carefully “rubber band” this into a larger frame to give the bees a head start on the frames that you want them to use.

The magnifying glass tool at the top of this page will help you search the forum for rubber banding comb into frames. There is quite a lot of info and photos, showing you how it works. Yes, it is messy and time-consuming, but you are saving the effort that the bees have put in.
