When to Paint Roof Shingles

Putting together a Flow Hive 2+. I am using finish on the cedar and will be painting the roof shingles blue. I am done finishing the wood and am about to paint the shingles. I have not yet attached the shingle panels to the gables. For those who have done this, would you recommend painting the shingles before or after attaching them to the gables. Seems like it would be easier to paint before, but having not done this before I thought I would ask. Thanks in advance.

I would assemble the roof and then paint the roof. It will help seal any gaps between the shingles.

I painted after I installed the roof to the gables. But I first stained the cedar under the roof and the sides of the gables. I used blue painter’s tape to tape of the bottom off the roof where it was stained from the roof paint.

@Brad321 what type of paint did you use for your roof! Looks great- assuming this also needs to be non-toxic water based? I’m going to be building and painting mine soon and would love any tips
