I’m not sure about other parts of the world but we Australians love our slang and colloquial language, which sometimes can feel like trying to learn a foreign language. I recently spent some time in outback NSW with a super experienced pollinator beekeeper who showed me some of his tricks (think Crocodile Dundee but with a hive tool) and I learnt a few beauties.

‘Plugging up’ - when the bees fill the brood nest with pollen and nectar AKA honey bound or backfilling.

‘Milk run’ - a personal annual route a pollinator beekeeper will take to check country for budding and flowering trees to understand where to move their hives for the upcoming seasons.

Have you come across any terms you’re not sure what they mean?

I just came across another new interesting term:

‘Crystallizers’

“In the beekeeping world, flower nectars with high glucose ratios that make honey more prone to crystalizing are known as ‘crystallizers’”.
