I have just received my second cedar hive and its ready for tung oil tomorrow. I oiled my first hive with Tung Oil and it seems to be holding up well.
I would really like to stencil something on the side of this new hive and wondered what paint people have used to stencil and I’m also wondering if stencilling would work under or over the tung oil… or perhaps not at all !
Any info greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hey Marnie.
I’m not a professional surface finisher, but I’ll offer what I know. Tung oil is not an ideal substrate for paint. It usually requires sanding and wiping with thinners to get a good bond.
I suggest you do your stencilling first with oil based enamel paint and leave it to thoroughly dry; the longer the better. Then do your oiling. The paint will last years and you can reapply oil as necessary.
