Our first Flow Hive arrives next week! Is it too late to start a nuc in California (Santa Barbara)?
I wouldn’t choose to start in June. You might be OK, depending on local forage, but you would probably have to feed all season and winter. I would rather get my name on a list for a nucleus in March next year.
The other option would be to join a local bee club, and see if anyone wants to sell an established full hive. With most bee clubs, you can make enough contacts to find somebody who knows when something is available.
