Hi from Grange, South Australia

Hi everyone,

Thought I’d introduce myself as a brand new beekeeper based in Adelaide. After plenty of reading, watching, and probably overthinking it, I’ve finally taken the plunge and purchased 2 x Flow Hive 2+ (7-frame setups).

Assembly was actually more straightforward than I expected. I’ve now had my first colony installed and up and running for just shy of a month, and I have to say—it’s pretty fascinating already. Sitting near the hive and watching the steady flow of bees coming and going has quickly become part of the daily routine.

I’ve started late in the season, so my main goal is to build a strong, healthy colony heading into winter and set things up to hit the ground running in spring. I’m working with a local mentor (Matt from Inglewood Bees), which has been invaluable in getting things established properly and giving me a bit of confidence that I’m not completely winging it.

At this stage I’m focused on:

  • Letting the bees settle and establish

  • Learning as much as I can without over-interfering

  • Getting across seasonal management specific to Adelaide conditions

I’m sure I’ll have plenty of questions as I go, but just wanted to say hello and thanks in advance —this forum has already been a great source of knowledge.

Looking forward to the journey… and hopefully some honey and comb down the track :honey_pot:

PS. If you’re concerned I have the super on too early, fear not it’s just housing the feeder.

PPS. The last photo was a new frame (with undrawn foundation) 12 days after the NUC was installed … impressive progress.

Cheers,
Paul

Welcome and congratulations on getting started.
Great to hear you’re working with a local mentor, that makes a huge difference.
Also, that’s excellent progress for 12 days, always a good sign when they’re drawing comb quickly and settling in well.
