Hi Anthony, thanks. If you want, you can courier your your box & frames to me & then I can get a colony established on your frames in your box & you can pick them up when the new queen is proved. Alternatively you can bring your box & frames & swap frames. One bloke did that last weekend. Another bloke from Byron Bay is sending his box & frames up by courier. If it was me, I’d just swap the frames. The cost of the courier could make the exercise a lot more expensive. I’ll put my ph. no. in my profile. Ring me any time. cheers
Kevin,
I’m just scrolling through forums and came across your pictures of your transfer from the the nuc to the Flow brood box. Have you left your hive on that table? From the pic it looks like one of the tables Bunnings have been selling. Once you put a super on the hive and it’s full with honey…I’m not sure that table will be sturdy enough over time. I only mention it for safety, and so there are no nasty surprises down the road…
Cheers,
Alan
Hi nux!
I am very interested in getting into beekeeping and just trying to get the info on what’s the best way to get into it and what type of hive would most suitable. I was wondering how your experience with the flow hive has been? Where did you end up getting your supplies, brood etc? Do you know of any great places nearby that run workshops or will let someone get some hands on experience? I also live in Warana on the sunny coast so was keen to get any information from a local.
Thanks!
Matthew
Hello Heron, My name is Mike and I live at Nambour. I am interested in becoming involved and seeking a mentor. would you be interested or know of someone in my area that may be happy to help.
thanks
Mike
Looks like @JeffH is only about 20 kilometers away from you. I bet he would let you watch him manage a couple of his 100 or so hives! He also sells bees and honey. I have watched a great video he made where he was looking at a friend’s Flow hive, so if he likes you, he may even be willing to come out to your location. His advice is very sound, so you are lucky to have him close to you!
Hi Mike, my phone number is in my profile, so feel free to phone me any time. I do bee classes at my place or your place. Apart from that I’m always available to guide you through any difficulties you may encounter. cheers
Hi @JeffH, I’ll have to give you a call sometime to come and do a lesson at my place! Wouldn’t that be a blast?
Hi Jeff, Thank you for the support. step one how do I find your profile. I feel I’m wondering blindly on the chat site.
Mike
Just click on the little image to the left of his name, then click on it again to open up all of the details.
Hi Dawn, that WOULD be a blast. What’s a 14 hr. plane ride between friends? At least we’d catch up on all the latest movies. From memory the movies on our last plane trip was “Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou” & “The Incredibles”. However the phone chat wouldn’t be completely out of the question
thank you
regards
Mike (Nambee)
Well, you will get on really well with David then. He just loved “The Incredibles”. So many sly jokes, very well-made.
Hi Matthew
Sorry for the late reply, I have been moving house & my business over the last few weeks.
Still yet to move into our new house but once setup you are more than welcome to come & have a look
At my setup anytime, I would love to help you out. We are now at Palmwoods.
Cheers
Hi everyone,
Does anyone have any info about selling honey from the Flow Hives? We have far more than we need and we give a fair amount of it away. Plenty of friends are wanting to pay us for it and we’re thinking it might be a good little exercise for our five kids to do. We want to make sure that firstly we’re ‘allowed’ to sell it and if there are any guidelines or restrictions. Also, does anyone know where I can source hexagonal glass jars (500ml) for a reasonable price?
Cheers
My advice would be to join a local club that offers insurance that covers the sale of honey.
Not sure if they have hexagonal jars, but ‘the reject shop’ used to sell glass mason jars for preserves at extremely competitive prices (not long ago). I bought some when I was up there on short notice and needed to bottle some honey up.
As far as I know there are no restrictions on selling honey. If you are going to sell it at markets etc., you probably need to have appropriate labels. If you are selling by weight, it’s a good idea to use trade approved scales. I sell my honey on a byo container basis. That makes it easier for us AND the customers. That way they are recycling their own containers plus they are not paying an extra premium you have to charge to cover the containers. However those hex containers are available online. I have no idea of the price.
I do package some honey for a church. I use chinese take away containers. They work out at around 20 cents for C16’s. They hold 500 grams. You can also get Chanrol tamper evident containers for around 50 cents. They hold 750 grams. That’s buying in volumes of 500. The tamper evident containers are really good.
Congratulations on your honey harvests, cheers:)
Thanks so much JeffH! I’ll look into the containers but at the moment, we’ll keep using our recycled jars.
We really enjoy watching your videos and seeing your replies to questions and queries on the Flow Forum. In speaking to a couple of experienced apiarists, we do seem to come up against a bit of resistance to the Flow Hive and are questioned as to why we didn’t get a traditional hive to start. We both appreciate your encouragement and advice - thanks very much!
Thanks RBK, we have a few of these shops close by, I’ll start checking them out.
Cheers
You are most welcome bandeesbees:) Getting customers to bring their own containers was my strategy right from the start. It was all about keeping costs down & keeping the price low for the customers.
Hi Vicki, I just this minute left a message on home messages 101, I hope it’s the right number. Anyway your hive is close to being ready. I saw your queen today, she’s a beauty. I just want to wait a bit longer for the brood to get sealed, then we know for sure she’s laying fertile eggs. cheers.
