Great work Kevin. Nice spot you have
Hi Kev, well done, many thanks. I forgot to check under the hive for any loose ones. Incidentally, I love your chook pen:)
Thanks @JeffH. We have four Rhode Island Reds. Weāre swamped with eggs at the moment. Haha. We get between 4 and 6 a day now. They are great layers.
All seem settled in @JeffH. Itās been a bit blustery and cool here during the days so Iāve pretty much left the girls alone. Itāll be interesting to see how much more comb theyāve made once I open up the hive.
I may wait for warmer and less breezey weather though.
Hi Kevin, yes I agree. that sounds like a good strategy. I had my heart set on going to the bees today, however this morning I felt it was just too cold to go opening any hives up. Iāll have plenty of opportunities in the coming weeks & months. cheers
Well here I am 7 days later. Couldnāt help myself. Itās a warm calm morning.
So lit the smoker, donned my garb and opened up the hive.
Remember I had gotten a 5 frame nuc from @JeffH. The other 3 frames were empty without foundation on them. Upon pulling each out a little very gently Iāve found all three are just about three quarters full of comb. So Iāve got some very active girls. They were pretty pissed at being disturbed and Iāve learnt a lesson about having thicker socks on. But Iām excited the box is now getting nice and full. I reckon in a couple of weeks Iāll try and put the flow frames on!
Exciting!
Hi Heron, just reading comments and I am keen to meet other flow hivers on the sunny coast. I live in Peachester and hopefully about to purchase my first nuc soon. A tad anxious as traditional bee keepers Iāve spoken to take a pregnant pause when I mention i have a flow hive. Cheers Duxmother
Hi JeffH, do you know anyone around Peachester who sells nucs? Cheers Viki
Hello everyone! We are newbies and have been avidly reading, googling and watching youtube. We went along to the local beekeepers meetings. So happy to have found this forum
We have assembled and painted our flow hive. After much discussion and several changes of mind we have found a great site to position it. Next we need some help getting the bees! We are at Dagun in the Mary Valley. If you can help us please let us know.
Hi Viki, I live at Buderim I can sell you a colony with a young queen on a byo box & frames basis. Give us a ring any time. I donāt know anyone else who sells nucs. except maybe Barry Williams at Glasshouse might be able to help you. Someone who lives a lot closer to him than me & also knows Barry ordered a colony from me during the week. Another Flow customer dropped off a brood box this afternoon for me to put bees in.
Hi There Duxmother, This does seem to be the case and we have had similar experiences to the point now that I simply leave out the flow hive part of the discussion. I guess old hands find change and innovation hard to accept. We have learned about bee keeping from our mostly own undertaking and it has been a very interesting journey along the way. You live close to a supplier of some very nice quiet bees. I donāt need to use gloves and veils, let alone a bee suit to manage them. Iām more than happy to help where I can.
Regards
Heron
Hi Jeff. Interested in a nucleus and Queen. Could we drop off our box and frames from the flow hive next week end? We are making a trip to the coast.
I wouldnāt be so quick to jump to that conclusion. There are a lot of Flow owners that arenāt doing the reputation of other (more responsible) Flow owners much service.
Some of the stories iāve heard (even in the last week) would make a great book.
Hi Sarah, no problems at all. Give us a ring to make sure weāre home.cheers
Thanks Jeff. Weāll be in touch
You will never find a better beekeeper than @JeffH. Some maybe as good, but not better!
Wow, thank you Dawn:)
Hi Jeff would it be okay for me to drop off a brood box. When is a suitable time for you. Apart from this week I am free most days except tues as I work in brissy. Iāll send you my mobile number. Iād love to see your hive in the flesh. As everything Iāve seen has been on YouTube! Cheers Viki
Hi Viki, any time that suits you. If Iām away working with the bees, itās usually mornings before about 10.00 or afternoons after around 2.30.
Hi @JeffH Iām looking for 1 maybe 2, 5 frame nucās, I see you come highly recommended.
What is the best way to go about it, I live about 3 hours away.
