As the title says I’m just wondering if the brood boxes have a divet for the frames to rest on and if this is the normal design for all langstroth bee boxes
Hi Tomb, welcome to the forum. No, there’s no divet for the brood frames to rest on. The brood boxes are normal Langstroth design boxes, 8 or 10 frame.
What stops the frames from falling out when I take a box off?
Gravity holds the frames down & in place because we usually keep the brood box level while moving it around. Also bees use propolis to secure the frames in place.
This is off my insuated hive, see the divet where there’s a level, it’s on both ends for the frames to sit on
Do the flow hive boxes come with something like this in the brood boxes?
No, they don’t, it’s not really needed.
Hey TombPrince,
Welcome to the forum. If I understand your question, along with your picture, I believe you’re referring to the rebate (not divet or divot - a small piece of grass and earth accidentally dug out) from which Langstroth frames hang. So, yes all Langstroth hives including Flow and your insulated hive have the rebate to which you refer.
Mike
Thank you, I was a bit puzzled how they would stay in the frame lol
Hi Mike, I thought Tomb was talking about slots for individual frames on the rebate, not the rebate itself.
Hey Jeff,
Yes, I understand. That was my first impression too. Then I thought it might be a terminology misunderstanding and reconsidered the question from the “rebate” perspective. It made sense to me then.
Mike
I just found this image on the internet in a matter of seconds.
You can clearly make out the “divet for the frames to sit on”
For me it isn’t easy to see the rebate in the pictures on any boxes tbh
If you hover over the box photo in this link, it magnifies, and you should be able to see the rebate clearly. Flow boxes are just the same construction:
Probably best to look at it on a larger screen than a phone, though…
Yeah good point, also maybe not a smashed phone screen too, thank you everyone I really appreciate the help
Perhaps I can just reassure you that all Flow hive boxes (brood and super in both sizes) have the correct rebates in them. They look exactly like your insulated box, except the materials are very different…
