Hi Everyone,
Just introducing myself, I’m MickA from Deception Bay in SE Qld.
I’ve just ordered a Flowhive 2+ and am anxiously waiting on delivery.
This is my first hive although I have been contemplating getting one for a couple of years but didn’t have the time, and was afraid of killing bees with my lack of knowledge.
I’ve been reading the forum and it looks like a wealth of information and knowledge is available for a nubee.
Can’t wait to start although it looks like autum/ winter isn’t the best time to start a colony.
Looks like I have a lot to learn.

Welcome to the forum and to beekeeping, Mick. You’re in a good place here for help along the way. I recommend joining a bee club. You’ll learn a tonne before spring and probably find a local source of bees for your new hive.
You’ll make some blunders along the. We all do. Just learn from the mistakes and keep going. Before you know it, you’ll be helping another newbee get started.

Fortunately there are 2 bees keeping supplies close by that I will be visiting shortly. I can only see a club around 2 hours drive from me but I’m sure there will be help near by.

If you are willing to travel ~60km north, @JeffH is in Buderim. He could give you a wealth of seasoned advice (he has many hives and has taken care of bees for years) and may even give you a look inside one of his hives, if you ask nicely. He also sells bees, and would give you a much bigger colony for a very good price than you would get from most suppliers. No, he does not pay me commission. He is just a good bloke and frequently helps out with answering questions on the forum

@MickA ,Hi Mick, I can certainly help, as Dawn suggests. There are clubs closer than 2 hours away. I’m pretty sure there’s one on the North side of Brisbane. Those suppliers should know. The one up here in Yandina is a good club, and Flow friendly.

Thanks, I visited Burnett bee keeping yesterday and had a great talk with the lady there who directed me to the Northside beekeepers at Lawnton.
I’ll see what that’s all about at their next meeting and go from there.
